The CircularBuild Project – Development and Validation of the Circularity Concept Applied to Modular Prefabricated Construction, under the Environment Program, and financed by the EEA Grants, aims to integrate alternative materials to the base solution, which enable the circularity of the modular panel production system, allowing the reuse of waste generated by “deconstruction” of buildings as a raw material for new panels/new constructions, without compromising the performance of the buildings.
The analysis and evaluation process directed the focus to materials with greater adaptability to the project requirements, with main emphasis on favorable responses to validation tests, structural performance, with bending tests, vertical compression, plane cutting, facade mechanics, functional, reaction and fire resistance, seismic resistance, acoustic behavior and energy efficiency.
The selection of the materials under analysis aimed at policies and good practices in the circularity and recycling of waste, allowing for greater economic sustainability, logistical efficiency, efficiency and optimization in the use of resources, through its integration in an industrial process, contributing largely to the new paradigm of “Zero Carbon Buildings”, from its industrial production to its end-of-life.
The development of the prefabricated modular constructive system had as main focuses, to enhance the sustainability of the exterior panel, of the thermal insulation, as well as the integration/by substitution, of alternative materials to aluminum. Thus, it was possible to integrate wood fiber materials, as a resistant material on the surface of the panels, the integration of 100% natural/recyclable cork agglomerate, as well as the introduction of wooden elements to the detriment of some aluminum elements.
The possibility of this process results from the work developed by the consortium, composed by the promoter CONCEXEC – Arquitetura, Lda. and the co-promoters, LNEC – National Laboratory of Civil Engineering, RISE Research and the Sustainable Habitat Cluster.
